Our Approach
The goal is always to get home safe, regardless of technique.
That can mean avoidance, de-escalation or the use of physical force depending on the circumstances.
Our curriculum is focused on defending against the most common types of assault in North America, developed with information from Stats Canada and the FBI Database and in consideration of Canadian self defense law.
The roots of the physical tactics of our system are primarily Krav Maga, supplemented by other arts including wrestling, Filipino Martial Arts and Jeet Kune Do.
What we teach wouldn’t be considered traditional martial arts – or even “traditional” Krav Maga.
What we teach
We believe self defense is about more than just
physically defending yourself
Physical Skills
We focus on two main goals: escape & counter ambush.
We start with prescribed responses to untrained types of assault using common patterns of movement reliant on gross motor skills. We then build up to fall back strategies when the initial response starts to fail or the attack changes in the dynamics of a violent encounter.
Our programs cover several areas including control tactics (restraints), ground fighting, multiple attackers and defense against weapons.
Proactive Skills
Violence doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You have to consider the psychological, physiological and legal aspects of self defense.
We talk about what happens before, during, and after a violent assault, covering various subjects including: awareness and avoidance, de-escalation, understanding criminal behaviours, victim selection, the effects of adrenal stress on performance, and the aftermath of a violent incident.
Our Classes
We train in a safe,
friendly, and ego free environment.
We are a small training group expanded from the original KPC Self Defense full time Gym in Edmonton. We started offering classes here in the HRM in September 2014 and have run continuously since then.

SD 102
This class is a continuation of the techniques and concepts taught in SD 101, including a continuation of the knife defense program and gun disarms, as well as introducing fundamentals that are a part of the other 3 progressive programs – takedown defense, ground defense basics, stand up wrestling basics and low line kicks. SD 102 material is both offered as a full program, as well as layered into the 3 other programs to keep the basic krav maga skills up.Dirty Boxing
This is our core striking program, drawing from Boxing, Wrestling, Jeet Kune Do and Muay Thai primarily, but applying it in a non sport fighting context. Our SD 101 and 102 programs are for getting through the first 3 seconds of an unavoidable ambush assault. This is for getting through the next few minutes, or when the assault starts from a further distance than a close quarter ambush.Weapons Training
The purpose of this program is training the use of weapons as force multipliers in self defense situations, in a legally justified and responsible way. The program focuses on weapons that are readily available in the everyday environment, taking principles from the Filipino martial arts with 2 basic types of weapons trained – impact and edged.Ground Fighting
The goal of this program is to get the fight off the ground as soon as possible. Principles are taken from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Wrestling. This program is for developing basic ground skills to deal with the average untrained attacker to someone with entry level martial arts training. If you are worried about dealing with a highly skilled ground fighter, there’s no better training than BJJ. This is not that.
Private Training
We also offer private lessons, small group lessons and structured self defense seminars for businesses and institutions on a limited basis.
Our SD 101 program starts January 6th 2025.
This class often sells out and is only offered a few times a year. Don’t miss your chance!
